I am incredibly proud to share that my student Jacob Wu has earned top honors in two major California composition competitions—a remarkable accomplishment that reflects both his creativity and dedication to music.

🥇 First Place – CFMC Junior Composers Contest (California Federation of Music Clubs)

Jacob was awarded 1st place in the CFMC Junior Composers Contest, one of the most established and respected composition competitions in California.

The California Federation of Music Clubs (CFMC) is part of a nationwide organization dedicated to promoting music education, performance, and creativity. Its Junior Composers Contest is designed to encourage young musicians to explore original composition, giving them the opportunity to develop their musical voice at an early stage.

Composers submit fully notated original works, which are carefully evaluated by experienced judges. Pieces are judged on:

• Originality and creativity

• Musical structure and form

• Harmony, melody, and development

• Notation and overall presentation

Winning 1st place in this competition is a significant distinction, recognizing Jacob as one of the top young composers in the state. This honor highlights not only his technical skill but also his unique artistic voice and imagination.

🥈 Second Place – MTAC Composers Today State Contest

In addition, Jacob earned 2nd place in the MTAC Composers Today State Contest, organized by the Music Teachers’ Association of California (MTAC).

This statewide program is highly regarded and attracts talented student composers from across California. The Composers Today program aims to foster creativity, musicianship, and contemporary composition skills, while giving students meaningful performance opportunities.

Participants submit original compositions that are adjudicated by professional composers and educators. Winners are selected across multiple divisions, and top winners are invited to:

• Perform their compositions live at the MTAC State Convention

• Share their work in a formal, professional concert setting

• Gain recognition among a statewide community of musicians

This experience is especially valuable because it allows young composers not only to write music, but to hear their own work performed and appreciated by a wider audience.

✨ These achievements are truly exceptional. Earning 1st place in CFMC and 2nd place at the MTAC state level demonstrates Jacob’s remarkable talent, discipline, and passion for composition.
