🎹 Piano Duet Festival 2025 — Symphony of Two

ree

Last Saturday, on October 18th, I had the honor of serving as the Chair of the Piano Duet Festival, hosted by the North San Diego Branch of the Music Teachers’ Association of California. It was truly a wonderful and inspiring event where music brought people together in the most beautiful way.

The festival took place at the beautiful, authentic studio of Ayse Underhill in Del Mar. Students had the opportunity to perform on some of the world’s finest pianos — Steinway and Yamaha. Beyond the music, we were treated to a breathtaking ocean view from the studio — a serene and inspiring backdrop that made the performances even more magical.

Siblings performed side by side, twins shared the same piano bench, parents played with their children, and teachers performed with their students. Even young musicians who had never met before came together and created something extraordinary — because when two people share the same passion and musical level, they can build harmony that transcends words.

Starting this year, I’m thrilled to announce that the Piano Duet Festival will become an annual tradition — a full-time event celebrating collaboration, creativity, and love for piano music. We had students of all ages and levels, including those from Ayse Underhill’s studio and other dedicated teachers across North San Diego.

As teachers, we know that preparing a duet is double the work — but the reward is priceless. Students learn teamwork, communication, active listening, and mutual support. They discover how to balance their part with their partner’s and how to breathe together through the music. These are not just musical skills — they are life skills that foster empathy and connection in an increasingly digital world.

This year’s festival theme, “Symphony of Two,” symbolizes that even two people can create something grand and unified — a true symphony of harmony and cooperation.

Every participant received a personalized diploma, an engraved trophy, flowers, and, most importantly, the uplifting energy from our wonderful audience — families, friends, and teachers who came to celebrate this musical journey together.

I’m deeply proud of every student who performed and grateful to all who supported this event. This festival couldn’t have happened without the incredible support of our branch manager, Joanne Stohs, whose dedication and encouragement made this event truly special.

The atmosphere was filled with joy, connection, and pure love for music. 🎶 Enjoy the performances and pictures below — I hope you’ll feel the same happiness and inspiration that filled the room that day.

Wishing everyone a beautiful and musical fall season!
